Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: What is Green Building?A: Originally, a green home may have incorporated some recycled materials, used some sustainable lumber, or had energy-efficient windows. It may have even had some rather ugly solar panels on the roof. Today’s definition goes far beyond that. Green building brings together a vast array of design and building practices to lower a home’s consumption of natural resources and reduce its negative impact on the environment. Effective green building results in more efficient use of energy and materials. It lowers operation costs, improves homeowner comfort and health, and it can even lessen the strain on local infrastructure. Today, green building encompasses design, site development, construction, operation, maintenance and removal. In other words, it covers the home’s entire life-cycle. Q: Are Green Building options expensive? A: Not necessarily. Every home offers green building opportunities, some of which create no additional cost or even save money. Other smart building practices such as the use of the Icynene ® Insulation System and Integrity Windows and Doors might increase the cost of the home, but save significant amounts of money over time. And, as green materials have become more mainstream, their availability has increased dramatically and their prices have dropped. Q: Does investing in a home's energy efficiency really make that much of a difference? A: Yes. The typical U.S. family spends more than $1300 per year on energy according to the Department of Energy, and 10% to 50% of that is wasted. The largest single environmental impact of homes is their ongoing consumption of energy. Thus designing and building an energy-efficient home is the number one green building priority. Q: Can Green Building methods help improve indoor air quality? A: Yes. Indoor air pollution is ranked as on of the EPA's top five public health concerns – even in new homes. Icynene ® for example, a great alternative to conventional insulation, completely seals the building envelope and provides a protective barrier against allergens, dust, and mold spores. Plus, it does not contain harmful chemicals or gasses like other insulations. Q: Interest in Green Building has grown significantly. Why? A: Green building helps reduce the impact of homes on the environment, but homeowners and homebuilders are realizing that greener homes can cost less to build than they did in the past and they will cost much less to operate, last longer, are healthier to live in, use less water and energy and often have a higher re-sale value (Source: U.S. Green Building Council). Q: What Green friendly programs does Torrey Building Systems support? A: We recognize, support or participate in the following programs:
